Hiking
There is a hiking trail for just about every difficulty and interest level in the area around Port Renfrew BC. From the 77 km West Coast Trail to the 20 minute walk to Botanical Beach there is something for all abilities.
Port Renfrew is the trailhead for both the historic West Coast Trail and the newer Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. Trail info and maps are available at The Trailhead’s Vancouver Island resort or online at westcoasttrailbc.com or www.juandefucamarinetrail.com.
The West Coast Trail - Runs north of Port Renfrew 77 kilometers along the west coast of Vancouver Island to Bamfield. This is a world renowned backpacking route through the island’s temperate rainforest and along its rugged coast, with cliffs, waterfalls, caves, rock formations and stunning beaches. It is necessary to book a reservation in advance to hike this trail through the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.
The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail - Travels 47 kilometers along the shore south from Botanical Beach to China Beach. There are access points in various locations along this trail making it possible to choose from day trips or one-three night excursions.

Kayaking Around Port Renfrew BC
The waters around Trailhead’s BC fishing lodge are a popular kayaking destination. Paddle around the incredible San Juan Inlet, along the coast or up the calm waters of the San Juan River estuary. You’ll enjoy the quiet, the views and nature surrounding you.

West Coast Wildlife Viewing
There is nowhere like the rugged west coast wilderness – the sea, the mountains and the forests. Wild creatures love it here too, and you’ll be sure to see some pretty incredible birds and beasts in the vicinity of our Vancouver Island resort.
Whether you take a whale watching tour, hike one of the major trails in the area or wander around on your own close to Trailhead’s BC fishing lodge, you’re sure to spot some of the area’s wildlife. Some of the creatures we share this corner of paradise with include:
- Bald eagles, hawks and herons
- Black tail deer - common
- Black bears and wolves
- Harbour seals, sea lions, otters
- Porpoises, orcas, grey or humpback whales

Beachcombing
From French Beach to Botanical Beach in Port Renfrew BC, you’ll find a string of amazing beaches with roaring surf, stretches for combing and intertidal pools to explore.
Botanical Beach – Located 5 kilometers from our BC fishing lodge, this is a popular destination for science students and marine life enthusiasts with its tidal pools filled with fascinating intertidal marine creatures and plants.
When visiting Botanical Beach be sure to make note of the tides. The best time to visit is at low tide but you also don’t want to be caught on the beach at high tide. It is also important to remember that this is a fragile intertidal ecosystem and marine life, shells, plants, and kelp should not be touched or removed from the beach.
Surfing
Many of the local beaches along the shoreline from Sooke are also home to some hard-core surfers. Beginners can try out the smaller waves south of Jordan River, while the regulars surf Jordan River, China Beach and Sombrio Beach.
Mountain Biking
Port Renfrew is host to several mountain bike trails ranging for beginner to advanced. Upon your arrival we will be happy to provide you with a map of all the local trails. Grab a picnic lunch and make your way to a spectacular lookout or spend your day challenging one of the many thigh burning single tracks.
Kayaking in the San Juan Inlet and RiversKayaking in the San Juan Inlet

Beaches And Lakes
There a several beaches and lakes in the Port Renfrew area. The most common of which are Lizard lake and Fairy Lake. Both lakes are just a short drive from the Trailhead Resort. The lakes are home to Cutthroat and sea run Dolly Varden. In the summer the beach area is popular for locals and tourists alike for sun tanning and swimming. There are hiking trails in the area as well as trail bike riding, and other outdoor activities.
